There comes a point in every man’s journey where the decisions you make stop being about you and start being about who you’re becoming. For Paolo Banchero, that point came this week.
At just 22 years old, Banchero signed a 5‑year, $239 million extension with the Orlando Magic. A deal that could climb to $287 million if he achieves All‑NBA or MVP honors.
It’s the largest contract in Orlando Magic franchise history, and among the biggest ever for a player his age.
🏛️It’s Not Just About What You Earn
A lot of people will say Paolo “secured the bag.” That’s fine as far as it goes. But, securing a bag isn’t the same as keeping it and it’s definitely not the same as multiplying it.
Even after taxes, agent fees, and lifestyle inflation, he’s likely to take home about $115–$125 million net over 5 years.
For a young athlete of faith and purpose, that’s a trust and a test. Because here’s the reality:
📉 Over 70% of pro athletes go broke within 5 years of retiring.
📊 Bad investments, reckless spending, and no vision beyond the game ruin more careers than torn ligaments ever will.
Paolo’s challenge now is leadership over his own finances. Making his money serve him, his family, and his community, instead of letting it become a curse.
🧑🏾💼From Player to Leader
What does a man do when he’s handed more money than 99% of people will ever see?
He doesn’t just play better. He becomes better.
This contract makes Paolo the financial and emotional cornerstone of the Orlando Magic.
He can’t just score 25 points a night. No, he’s now responsible for setting the tone for younger players, holding teammates accountable, and showing the city what leadership looks like.
Leadership is never free. In sports, in faith, in life, it costs everything.
🙏Faith and Focus
Paolo has been gathering little by little and now he’s been given much.
The question now is: will he keep his eyes on the bigger picture? Will he use this contract as a platform to glorify God, strengthen his family, and invest in more than himself?
Only time will tell.
📈What This Means for You
You don’t have to be 6’10” and the face of an NBA franchise to take something away from this:
- Learn how money actually works.
- Build your own skill set until people can’t ignore you.
- Lead your family, your circle, and yourself.
- Don’t chase the bag. Chase the mission, and the bag will follow.
